Service learning is an innovative approach to teaching, learning, research, and student support “that combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility and commitment to the community (Definition adapted from Campus Compact).” William Paterson University is unique among our peers in that we incorporate civic engagement as a requirement within our University Core Curriculum. The Community and Civic Engagement requirement (UCC Area 5) focuses on ideas and possibilities of community and participating effectively as responsible citizens. Learn more at the WP UCC website.
