The Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award Every year, NJ History Day chooses one middle and one high school teacher as recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Award, otherwise known as The MacGregor Teacher of the Year Award given out by each of the 57 National History Day affiliates. The two awards are presented to teachers who “demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest.” Past Winners 2022 Michael Garzio of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South and Lizandaa Alburg of the Paterson Academy for the Gifted and Talented (Paterson School 28). 2021 Cindy Smith of Woodglen School (Lebanon Township) and Theresa Maughan of East Orange STEM Academy. 2020 2019 2019 prize recipients Ms. Hurwitz-Kushner and Dr. Bransfield receiving their awards at the New Jersey History Day awards ceremony
